Abstract
This study¡¯s purpose was to examine the effects of mind-subtraction meditation on emotional state of college students. Its additional purpose was to contribute to advancing fundamental educational knowledge on character development for college students. This quasi-experimental study used non-equivalent comparison group, pre and post-test design, to measure the effects of mind-subtraction meditation on college students studying emergency medical service. An experimental group consisted of 38 participants who attended the meditation program and a control group consisted of 34 non-participants of the program; both groups were given pre-test and post-test of Draw-A-Story(DAS: Earwood, Fedorko, Holzman, Montanari & Silver, 2004) and Wartegg-Zeichentest tool(WZT: ÜØè©ÙëìÑ & áæê«ë¦ò«, 1996), before and after 8 weeks of the meditation program to measure their emotional states. The study results showed significant increases on the experimental group¡¯s total scores of both DAS and WZT in comparison to the control group. There were especially significant improvements noted in the subscores of WZT which measured energy levels related to achievement and desire to advance, energy levels related to conflict and tension, and integrative ability for intellect and reasoning. These improvements seemed to be due to decreased anxiety and worries (related to inferiority and uncertain future) as a result of the meditation practice.
